three smart ideas for a promising new decade |
|
by Gita Piramal, February-February 2010 |
"Real progress calls for a radical change in the way we think and operate. You cannot manage third generation strategies with second generation organizations and first generation managers. Over the past decade, there has been a significant improvement in the quality of strategic thinking and analysis within Indian companies. Today, most managers have at least a broad understanding of their strategic imperatives. This is what I mean by “third generation strategies”: a reasonably sophisticated analytical insight into the multidimensional capabilities that are necessary to win in the marketplace.
Yet organizational structures and processes still lag behind their strategic aspirations. No doubt significant improvements have been achieved:
procedures have been simplified, new information technologies have been introduced, and activities and processes have been streamlined. This is “second generation organization”: considerably improved, but not yet there to meet the strategic demands."
